Khouzayma Alwani

Khouzayma Alwani was born in 1934 in Hama, Syria, the son of a lawyer who later tragically lost his life while serving as a judge. In 1957, he moved to Italy to pursue his studies in painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, where he graduated in 1961. In 1964, he also obtained a diploma in set design.

In 1966, he was appointed head of the set design department at Syrian national television, and the following year, he became the head set designer at the National Theater of Damascus. In 1969, he was named assistant professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Damascus.

Awarded a scholarship, he continued his studies in 1973 at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, earning his degree in painting in 1977. In 1978 he returned to Damascus as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, a position he held until 1989, till he moved to Belgium.

• 1964: Participation in the Venice Biennale.
• 1964 – Present: Creation of 45 set designs for the National Theatre of Damascus and Syrian Television.
• 1970: Founding of the “Group of 10”, which had an innovative influence on the Syrian art world.
• 1977: Poster selected for the exhibition “The Political Poster” at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
• Member of the executive committee of the Syndicate of Fine Arts in Syria, contributing to various cultural agreements with Bulgaria, Poland, East Germany, and the former U.S.S.R.
• Participation in numerous solo and group exhibitions in countries such as Belgium, France, Italy, East and West Germany, Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, India, Cuba, Syria, various South American and Arab countries.
• Multiple participations in “Intergrafik” in Berlin.
• Works held in private collections in Belgium, Syria, different Arab countries, Italy, West Germany, France, the United States, Canada, Russia, Bulgaria, and the United Kingdom.
• Monumental works in public buildings and the Damascus Museum.
