Diane Marie Uwase (RW, 1993) is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. At a young age, she discovered her fondness for drawing as she would draw the people around her and she kept up this practice sporadically throughout her life. Since initiating her artistic practice in 2020, Uwase’s work delves into allegorical portraits by capturing diverse individuals in nuanced states, presenting viewers with captivating spaces for contemplation and conjecture.
Her process is conducted in an intuitive manner that consists of meeting the subjects (mainly by chance) and being attracted by their features, emotions, and candour. She spends time getting to know them through meetings and interviews in which they are also photographed. These interviews are revisited several times until the ideas of the final pieces are formed. Her work is embedded with personal symbolism to her and her subjects thus pushing different perspectives on her narrative work.
Her work is part of private collections in Europe.
